Walking Dead Season 3 Episode 316: Welcome to the Tombs

I know I'm late with this, but it's really not my fault. Right now we live in Africa and we had a massive storm this weekend that knocked out the power AND the internet. On Monday when the internet was still not up I thought I was going to light myself on fire. But I finally got to see it so here goes...
I did not see it going down like this for season 3's final chapter. It was way less epic and intense and way more touchy-feely than I expected it to be..... but I LIKED it. At the end I felt like I was breathing a sigh of relief as we had all my favorite characters still alive and kicking, the Governor somewhat vanquished, and Rick clearly back as a morally centered leader who is now accepting refugees from Woodbury. He's come a long way from just a few episodes ago when he refused to accept Tyreese and Sasha, and even from last week when he was still considering handing Michonne over to the Gov. I still have questions but for the most part this is the most satisfied I have ever been at the end of a season.
The episode starts in a rather brutal fashion with the Governor laying into Milton. For some reason he blames the death of 8 of his men on the fact that Milton burned the pit walkers. 2 observations:
1.) Merle took out 8 guys?!? I had no idea. Damn boy died a hero!
2.) Scapegoating in it's most obvious form. Milton had nothing to do with Merle's shoot-out but the Gov needs someone to blame that is still alive.
He ends up stabbing Milton in the guts and leaving him in the room with Andrea to die, turn, and eat her. Yikes. What a predicament. I couldn't tell if Andrea had been tortured by Dr. Evil or if she was just all bloody from her flight to the prison and then trying to escape out of the chair, but either way she looked pretty banged up.
Back at the prison everyone packs up and I actually thought that they were leaving. I was glad to see that Daryl took his awesome Pancho Villa poncho with him. Nothing beats the poncho/chopper/crossbow combination. Rick and Michonne have a really nice conversation where they clear the air about the last few days and (we assume) off they go.
The Governor gets his people all riled up to attack the prison when Tyreese and Sasha bow out and say they will act as guards but won't attack the living. Awesome performance. They both looked scared out of their wits having to tell him that and I would be too. The Gov takes off and storms the gates of the prison and it's quite the attack. We've got grenade launchers, machine guns, you name it - and I was glad our little group of heroes had already split. They descend into the bowels of the prison and that's when Rick and co. re-appear in what has to be the absolutely lamest ambush on the planet. One tear-gas canister thrown down at the bad guys and they they give them all time to run out of the dungeon and re-group?!? What??? How about get a huge gang of them down there like leading buffalo into a blind-canyon, close a door behind them, locking them in, pick off the few still tumbling around upstairs and then deal with the main group that you have ALL LOCKED UP IN YOUR PRISON. At that point you have all the time in the world to deal with them. You could chuck in another tear-gas canister and make them all cry if they don't lay down their weapons. You could starve them out. You could show them Zombies behind one door and tell them that either they lay down their weapons or you let the Zombies have at it. There are so many options you would have in this scenario. And the Governor, the big baddie himself was even down in the basements with this big group. They could have captured the head honcho! Pretty stupid of him for going down there, but apparently he has nothing to fear since the good guys aren't smart enough to take advantage of it. Bah!
Back at Woodbury Andrea and Milton's scenes were absolutely gripping, and in stark contrast to the mayhem going on back at the prison. What made these scenes so memorable was the classic horror movie time-bomb dilemma interspersed with 2 characters having really compassionate moments as a life counted down. It was really well-done. Andrea is trying to get a pair of pliers with her toes and get out of the chair before Milton dies and re-animates. In the end she manages to get free just as he comes back alive and we don't get to see exactly what happens but we hear the sounds of a life-or-death struggle.
Back at the prison Rick's group has rousted the Woodbury gang and let them all escape to fight another day and they celebrate this awesomeness with hugs and applause (!). Carl guns a survivor down in cold blood and Hershel has to tell Rick about it. What's up with that Big C? I was just singing your praises a few weeks ago and then you go and do a stupid thing like this. Growing up in the Z.A. is so darn awkward. I mean everyone is a knucklehead when they're young - shoot my 6 year old flooded the upstairs bathroom on Monday so badly that it was RAINING in the Garage one floor below, but when you screw up in the Z.A. it's all life and death and everyone is watching. Was this just a blip do you think or are we growing a new little psychopath to replace the Governor?
Speaking of psychopaths the Gov, drives away, has a hissy fit and shoots almost all of his people. I did NOT see that one coming. Kind of bummed for all of them but on the other head that kind of eliminates the Woodbury threat eh? Choose a better leader next time people. His last two remaining henchmen look so freaked out that I don't see them letting the Gov live much longer. They have to put their heads together and take him out. Right? RIGHT?!?
The prison group decides that they will send 5 guys after 30 some Woodbury soldiers to hunt them down and finish the job but I can't even focus on the insanity of this plan because...what? Did that just happen? BETH kills a walker! I had to re-wind and watch it again. Wow, gun shooting and now walker killing. She may not be wearing red anymore people. Luckily AGAIN for our little group and their tragic decision making, all their enemies are dead when they next come across them. That's right Rick old buddy, you didn't win the game, the Governor LOST. You dodged so many bullets in this whole fiasco (literally). So maybe watch the tape and learn so you have a better battle plan for next time.
They find a lone survivor who can bear witness to the slaughter and take her back to Woodbury. She tells Tyreese and Sasha what happens and they let them all in. They hurry to find Andrea and find out that she did kill Milton but not before he bit her. Andrea's last moments were so sweet and very hard to watch. She is so happy when she hears that the group is alive and safe and that Michonne is a part of them. She just didn't want anyone to die and because of that SO MANY people are dead. Should have shagged him and stabbed him baby, that's the bottom line. But the recurring theme in this episode is that there are really not a lot of second chances in the Z.A.
...bummer.
The episode ends with a bus-load of refugees from Woodbury arriving at the prison and shuffling into the cell block. THAT will infuriate the Gov when he finds out. But he seems to have fled. What do you think - will he be back? And is the Prison still a good choice? What's their plan for the future? I mean it's not like they took in a strapping load of productive workers. Did you SEE the sorry bunch that shuffled off of that bus? Talk about dead weight. They now have a lot more mouths to feed and a lot less people able to do it, and it's not like they can take their show on the road with a gang that size. What do you think will happen? After all, we have a looooong time to discuss before we get any answers...

The Walking Dead, Season 3 Episode 315: This Sorrowful Life

Merle spends his days like an ADHD 8th grader on summer vacation with no supervision. So you know you've stopped following your conscience when he has to give YOU a lecture on morality. That's pretty much what it came down to in the first half of the episode with Rick fairly sure he was going to hand Michonne over to the Governor and everybody else trying to talk him out of it. Daryl gives Rick a gentle push but Rick still thinks he's going to hand her over. Then he talks to Merle. And he opens the conversation with the best one-liner of the episode:
"Do you even know WHY you do the things that you do?"
As a parent and a teacher I have said something similar to this many, many times. Of course he does. He's searching for drugs yo. What else would you do when you're bored in a prison? I mean doing something constructive to help out is soooo conformist.  Merle leaves a trail of destruction wherever he goes and being around people like that just gets tiring after a while. But then he gives Rick the moment of clarity he needs. He looks him right in the eye and lets him know that he's not turning Michonne over to the Governor to be killed. If he turns her over she'll be kept like some kind of horrific science experiment - she'll bear the brunt of all the Governor's sick, sick tendencies and she WON'T be killed unless he somehow slips up and gives her enough freedom to end her own life. What a difference. In that situation any of us might volunteer for a quick death if we thought it would somehow spare the lives of our comrades, but I don't see ANYONE ever volunteering to go sit in the Governor's dental chair. No siree bob. Merle explains it all to Rick with verbs in his sentences and Rick tries to move forward with his plan but when he goes to collect wire to tie her up with, he sees Lori and realizes that turning Michonne over to a psychopath is not something he can do. I was pretty gripped about this whole thing.... my stomach was churning and I was all clenched up because in the comic, the Gov DOES get his hands on Michonne and the result is blood curdlingly bad. And that's in a black and white comic. I have NO DESIRE to see those scenes played out in technicolor, thank you very much. So I breathed a huge sigh of relief when I knew Michonne was safe.... for like 3 minutes. Because then Merle grabs her to take her to the Governor. WHAT?!? It's such a horrible thing to do that he talks Rick out of it and then decides to fall on the sword because he is already evil in his own mind. So now I am back to squirming in agony on the couch. I think at one point I actually bit a cushion. Jeepers.
Nothing in this world can be worse that being a tied-up prisoner during the Z.A. Just walking around is scary enough with Walkers lurking behind every tree and building. I mean look what happened to Andrea last week! But being at the mercy of whoever is holding you prisoner and relying on them to defend you has to be terrible indeed for someone as independent and awesome as Michonne. Even tied up she's still a rock-star though, and takes out 2 Zombies while she is tied to a post - one of them with her own bonds! At this point I was screaming at the TV (I do this a lot actually - I give advice, shout warnings, you name it...) "Merle you idiot!! You find someone in the Z.A. that can kill Zombies while they're tied up you gotta CHERISH that person and hold them close!! You don't sacrifice them to your enemies!!" Arrrgh!!
He successfully hotwires the car and off they go and that stinks because now he'll get her to the Governor faster. But I underestimated Michonne. She is a soft-spoken negotiator and little by little gets in his head. This is a side of her that we haven't really seen before and I like it. He finally stops the car and lets her go. Somehow she has convinced him that instead of sacrificing his soul, he can find redemption by sacrificing himself and he sets out to do just that. And what a plan he comes up with. All plans of this nature are best fueled by grain-alcohol if you're Merle so that's stop #1 and then he leads his own little Zombie parade right into the middle of the Governor's party. He uses the ensuing chaos and gunshots to cover the sounds of his own shots and he starts picking off the bad-guys. And he comes soooo close to taking out the head honcho himself, but alas that would have left us with a very dull season finale indeed, so no luck there.
Back at the Prison, Daryl realizes what Merle is doing and sets off to go find him (on foot dude, REALLY?!?) and Glen proposes to Maggie. Awwww.... I love the hard core realities of the Z.A. too. Want to get engaged? Just go shopping for rings along the fence, chop off a few fingers and voila!
I like what Glen and Maggie add to the show. They are a constant reminder that there really may be a part of humanity that is worth saving.
Now we gotta talk about Daryl. My heart broke for him a thousand times over. As much as the rest of us might breathe a sigh of relief to have Merle and his 'crazy' off the playlist, that's Daryl's brother. And you can watch friends die and turn, but nothing really prepares you for the turning and death of a family member - someone you knew B.Z. (before zombies). He's just devastated and I'm devastated right there with him at that moment. I had a horrible moment where I thought Merle was going to take him out, but he rallied and did what he needed to do.
R.I.P Merle buddy. For a dude that got handcuffed to a pipe on a roof 2 years ago you've had a good run.
We didn't find out anything about Andrea or Woodbury or Milton. I think I saw Tyreese and Sasha's friend's son get his head blown off so that should send that guy fully into crazy-ville right alongside the Governor. What a season finale it's shaping up to be, and how I wish they'd give us a 2 hour episode.
What are your predictions?? Let's have at it!

Walking Dead Season 3, Episode 314: Prey

Arrrrghhh, bad guys are SO hard to kill. The crux of this episode played out like the opening scene of a classic horror flik: Moonless night? Check. Creepy abandoned outbuilding full of booby-traps and hidden corners? Check. Hot blonde chick? Check. Deranged killer that you just KNOW will come out on top because it's just the beginning of the movie? (or in our case almost the season finale, so the death of the Gov would leave us with no antagonist with which to wrap up the season) Check. Classic old-school suspense. All my fingernails are GONE after this episode and with only 2 more installments left in the season it looks like I won't be growin' em back out until April.
I'm really starting to like Milton. At first I thought he was a creepy henchman, kind of like the Himmler to the Governor's Hitler. But now he's showing how much heart and conscience he really has. I sure hope he lives out the season, I'd really like him to end up with the crew at the prison. He's already bonded with Hershel, and I'm sure he would be well-received by the rest of the group as well.
So we start the episode with a weird flashback to the days of Michonne and Andrea that really didn't reveal all that much. We learned that Michonne's decoy zombies were people that she knew and that they weren't very nice guys. Michonne clearly doesn't want to talk about it but Andrea prattles amicably away showing that she can be annoying in pretty much any setting.
Then Milton finds out about the Governor's torture chamber, clues Andrea in on it but then prevents her from shooting him in the head. The guy's compassionate, you have to hand it to him. Andrea sees the Gov's chamber of horrors and instead of seducing him and then killing him and getting it RIGHT this time she decides to flee the scene. Not to worry though, she sneaks out with no witnesses, and goes into stealth mode like a ninja so the Governor and his henchmen have no hope of tracking her down. Or not. We can only dream of such things my friends. What REALLY happens is that she strides out the front gate with bold declarations, wearing her "Heading Back to the Prison, Yo" T-Shirt and then proceeds to run down the center line of the main road back to her friends. I literally had my head in my hands with audible groaning. It boggles the mind. THEN once the first truck heads out after her she heads across an open field with no possible cover and gets spotted by her Ex. Good times, good times. Next comes the horror movie segment. I have to give her massive props for unleashing the Zombies and hiding behind the door though. If only it had worked....
I really like Sasha and Tyreese and I hope they hook back up with the prison crew and give Rick a second chance. For a while there I thought that THEY had burned the Zombies in the pit. I didn't think Milton had it in him. He may be the key to the whole thing.
We finished up the episode with Andrea back in the hands of the Gov, (bummer that the person who frequently hallucinates was on guard duty eh?) Tyreese and Sasha believing in the goodness of the Governor, and Milton being on the outs. He'd better think about heading for the hills as well, or he could be the next person going for a ride in the Governor's little chair.

Walking Dead Season 3, Episode 310: Home

You know there's good hallucinating and bad hallucinating. Good hallucinating is when you know you're losing it so you see phantoms and hear your little voices and talk on the phone to dead people but you keep that your little secret and you don't let anyone know. Even when your special ghost people show up in front of other people you just play it cool and pretend you don't see them. I mean if the small kid in "The Sixth Sense" could do it then c'mon Rick dude, SURELY you can pull this off too. And you don't have to explain why all of a sudden you've got frosty breath syndrome that that kid did....
Bad hallucinating on the other hand is when you have one-sided screaming conversations with your hallucinations in front of everyone and/or go bolting outside of your secure compound leaving all the gates open behind you. At that point, you've become a huuuuge liability and if I were part of your group I would seriously have to consider taking you out into the woods for a one-way nature hike. "Sorry guys... Rick got attacked by a rabid flying squirrel and fell off a cliff... there was nothing I could do."
Credits roll and we cut to a short and very pointless conversation between Andreea and the Gov. Arghh.... as IF he's going to step down instead of being the same old crazy, sadistic tyrant that we all know and want to kill. All the leadership on this show is NUTS right now my friends, NUTS. He's trying to side-track her so he can go on a rampage against the prison and it's Andreea so of course his little ploy works.
Then we cut to Daryl and Merle just kind of floating around in the woods and Daryl is having second thoughts about leaving the group. YES!!
And back in the Prison Glen is showing some real leadership and he may actually be sane! Hope that doesn't mean he gets popped or eaten soon. It's so nice to see someone making a rational plan. I liked the idea of sneaking up on the Gov and taking him out but that's just me. So they have to decide whether they run or stay and fight. To me trying to make a stand without Daryl is madness. But leaving with an infant and a one-legged guy is also crazy. That doesn't leave them a whole lot of options. What's up with Maggie. She didn't get raped and they got out of Woodbury alive. This isn't Sweet Valley High babe, it's the Zombie Apocalypse. You had to take your shirt off. We get it. But I mean COME ON. It's not like you had chop off your own hand or have someone cut a baby out of you with no anesthesia. In the Z.A. you take your licks and you move on. And I mean with the responsibility of the group now resting on his narrow shoulders Glen is going to need the love of a good woman not to mention a good shag now and then.
Then we're back to Merle and Daryl and Merle is being a blathering idiot as usual. They come upon a group of people getting attacked by walkers and Daryl stages an EPIC rescue. How much do we love watching Daryl in action? I love it when he stops shooting the crossbow and just starts stabbing people in the head with arrow. What a stud.  AND he scores the Zombie Kill of the Week by slamming one of their heads in the trunk of the car. Wow. The whole thing is just awesome until it's over and Merle - who manages to get off about 20 racial slurs AS he's fighting a zombie battle - wants to loot them. He really has no redeeming qualities. Daryl gets to see Merle with fresh eyes and realizes that his place is back with his true family at the prison. We're left hoping that he gets there in time.
Back at the prison Glenn is off on a personal vendetta and Rick has, indeed become the mayor of crazy town. I love his comment that he's got "stuff out here" and he doesn't know how much longer he'll be out there. The way Hershel deals with him is so gentle. Season 3 Hershel has totally redeemed himself from season 2 in my books. So glad he didn't get eaten when I wanted him to. We cut to Carol who is having a nice conversation with Axel when his head explodes and all hell breaks loose. Major points to Carol for having a casual conversation with someone one minute and using their dead body as a human shield seconds later. Major deductions to Carl and Beth for attempting to take cover behind a open metal bleachers AND for failing to hit the dude in the guard tower even though he didn't take cover once! Remember at the end of season 2 where there was the shoot-out at the farm and this group was cranking out head-shots with no misses? Geez, what happened to them....
The gov attacks them with gunfire AND a trojan-horse van of Zombies and I gotta say that the take home message of the whole battle is that the samurai sword is really the Z.A. weapon of choice. Look what happens to Rick when he runs out of bullets. He's left trying pistol-whip the suckers and fight them hand to hand. But Michonne strolls into the area full of Zombies and you just want to yell at everyone to stay safe behind her. She just takes them out so fast and never has to even get close. They need to bust out the yellow pages, find the nearest martial arts  mega-store and hook the whole group up with that business.
And just when Rick was about to achieve epic fail status, Daryl returns! Points for all the awesome moves dude, but deductions for bringing Merle back with you. I feel very satisfied at the end of this episode that even though dark clouds loom on the horizon the whole little gang is back together and together they can face what's coming.
Q: What happened to Sasha and Tyreese and that whole gang? Surely they didn't take Rick at his word to get out when 1.) He was clearly insane when he said it and 2.) Everyone else wanted them to stay. They're gonna need them if they plan to fight the gov. Maybe they were just napping back in ca cell somewhere.

I will not get to see Next week's episode until March. I will be in Disney World, and you know... Zombies and Disney don't mix. (Zombies are SO unmagical...) Who wants to guest-blog next week's episode for me?

Walking Dead Season 3 Episode 307: When the Dead Come Walking

The worst is when you've found a great place to hole up and ride out the Zombie Apocalypse - just you and the carcass of your late little dog - but then a gang of maniacs come tearing into your cabin, stab you through the shoulder and chuck you out your front door to be consumed by the Zombies that are pursuing them. I ask you, is nothing sacred these days?!?

Oh the humanity. I've said it once and I'll say it again, if we're going to overcome Zombies and survive as a species we gotta work TOGETHER people. Merle is a dirty rotten punk, the Governor is just evil and Daryl is never going to be able to found the Republic of Awesome with Michonne if he keeps pointing his crossbow in her face. But let's begin at the beginning.

We finally get to see the Woodbury interrogation chambers and I was scared out of my mind for Glen and Maggie. They don't get enough props from me because their storyline tends to be sweeter and milder than the survival stuff we so often focus on but they are 2 of my favorite characters and I would be very, very bummed out if anything bad happened to them. Merle is 100% pure distilled 8th grade bully. He reacts more than he thinks and he lets his emotions run totally away with him. I mean throwing a zombie into the room with Glen tied up inside was BOGUS by any standard. Even if you're on the side of the bad guys what's gonna happen with Glen dead? Now you have nothing to hold over Maggie because he's the only thing she cares about and Zombified Glen is certainly not going to spill any secrets so you've totally lost your upper hand. Stupid, Stupid, Stupid!
Can we pause for a moment and talk about stark, raving, zombie defense talent? Glen is duck-taped to a chair and he defends himself, fights against and neutralizes a zombie using tactics that can only be described as Daryl-worthy. Glen just went up about 20 places in the Billboard Hot 100 and I was a little blindsided. I may have underestimated our mild-mannered Korean friend. His scream of aggression at the end of the fight was pure visceral emotion. Go on with your bad self, Glen.... we're lovin' it.
The scene with the Governor and Maggie was so awful that I actually got cold watching it and had to go grab a sweater. That dude is EVIL and >spoiler alert< he's a brutal rapist in the comic so I was petrified that Maggie was going to be his first victim and they had switched things all around for the show. Thank goodness this did not happen but I'm not ruling it out for the future. Wish Andrea could see THAT side of him in action. She'd never get to re-join the crew at the prison having willingly shagged one of their attackers. But it may be too late for Andrea. The Dark Side is strong in her.
Sooooo utterly disappointed in the quality of experiments being conducted in the Zombie Research Laboratory. Really dude? I'm all about science and innovation but by the end of it I was really hoping for nerdy lab tech guy to get chomped. That would have made things so much more interesting. I have so many great experiments that I want to conduct on Zombies. Can we please throw one in a freezer and see what happens? Maybe the act of freezing bursts cells in the brain and once they thaw they can't reanimate. Useful things to know because we've already gone through one winter so Canada could be a Zombie Free Zone. Imagine that! But instead we're seeing if they have residual memory. What a waste. Who cares if they do? They can't be turned back into people no matter what and you'll still have to kill 'em so this knowledge helps no one. I need to run the ZRL, that's all there is to it.
So finally on to our prison posse. For one horrible moment I thought Rick was going to let Michonne die on the wrong side of the fence. I was screaming "Rick - she's got FORMULA man...why? how? Don't you want to know?!?" But it was Carl who saw the light and saved the day. Right on little guy. They drag Michonne inside and are very mean to her right from the get-go. Hard to watch because we know how much this group needs her and how much she needs the group, but ironically this is a response that Michonne is comfortable with. You show her an apparent Utopia where everything is hunky dory and she can't leave fast enough. Tell her that after you help her with her leg she'd best be on her way and she's OK with that. Good instincts to have for the Z.A. people... take note.
They may have gotten vital info from her a little quicker if they had been nicer, but finally they find out about Glen and Maggie and they all start working together. I had a horrible moment when I thought moustache guy and Beth were going to be on the away team (bloodbath!) but cool heads prevailed and a hard-core squad set out to raid Woodbury. Seeing Daryl and Michonne working together in the same little squad made me so happy I was jumping up and down on the couch and that's when the show came to an abrupt end and I fell to the ground with a scream of rage. As usual I totally lost track of time and got blindsided by the cliffhanger. Curse you Walking Dead!!!
2 questions:
1.) Is it me or did Michonne have new clothes when they set out for Woodbury and why are all her duds so utterly cool? Can we get a "Michonne" line at Target or something? Maybe the tag line could be "You can move comfortably while killing the undead without sacrificing your style." I would totally buy that.
2.) Does anyone else watch the little iTunes extra "Inside the Walking Dead" where it turns out that like all of the cast including most of the Zombies are all British? What on EARTH is up with that? Are we so hard up for good American actors that we now have to train Brits to pull off a southern accent (they do a really good job BTW). But how weird is it to watch the episode and then hear the cast being all "Just chuffed to bits to be making this show. Quite smashing.... Jolly good old chap.." and on and on. FREAKY.
